Draft a proposed parenting plan for the child.
Establishing parentage does not automatically establish a parenting plan or child support. The Washington Courts have forms you can use to draft a proposed parenting plan. You can submit your proposed plan with your petition to establish parentage or you can give it to the judge later.
In late spring 1998, the Washington State Supreme Court Gender and Justice Commission and the Domestic Relations Commission began a study of the Washington State Parenting Act. This report presents information from one of the four parts of that study, an analysis of the contents of recent parenting plans. As a single parent, one of the best ways to increase your chances of winning child custody is to get to know the child custody laws in your state. Oregon custody laws are generally similar to other states. Despite this, there are always nuances you need to keep in mind before heading into family court.
[6][[Image:File for Child Custody in Washington State Step 3 Version 2.jpg|center]- If the judge rules that you are a parent of the child, you and the other parent must come up with a parenting plan that establishes where the child will live and the amount of child support that will be paid. If you and the other parent can't come to an agreement on your own, the judge will order a parenting plan based on the best interests of the child.
- Work with the other parent to come up with the parenting plan. If the other parent isn't willing to work with you, or if you can't agree on issues involved with the parenting plan, you might consider counseling or mediation to help the two of you reach an agreement.
